As an interior designer, it’s key to stay aware of trends and more importantly establishing classics. Especially, when transforming the heart of the home: the kitchen. It's not just about the big-ticket items like appliances and countertops; the devil is truly in the details, especially when it comes to hardware. Here are my thoughts on the nuances of kitchen hardware trends.
Trends Taking Their Final Bow Ornate Cabinet Handles and Knobs: While they've had their moment under the spotlight, the curtain is slowly closing. The shift is towards simplicity—a nod to the less-is-more philosophy. This doesn’t count for maximalist interiors.
Brushed Nickel and Stainless Steel Finishes: These finishes, once the darlings of kitchen design for their sleek appeal, are now passing the baton to warmer, more characterful alternatives.
Generic, Basic Pulls and Knobs: Think big box store pulls and knobs. It's time to say goodbye to the nondescript, it immediately dates the space.
Polished Chrome: Its gleaming presence has graced many kitchens, but the maintenance and omnipresence have dulled its sparkle.
And Now, For The Spotlight
Matte Black Hardware: Think of it as the little black dress of kitchen hardware—timeless, versatile, and undeniably chic. It’s the perfect counterpart to any color palette, bringing depth and drama to spaces both traditional and modern.
Mixed Metals: This is by far my favorite, it’s here where the symphony really begins. Imagine brass flirting with black or copper waltzing with chrome. It's a bold move that pays off, offering a layered, curated look that's as personal as a signature.
Minimalist, Flat Bar Pulls: For those who whisper rather than shout, these pulls are the epitome of understated elegance. Their clean lines are a testament to the beauty of simplicity.
Antique Brass and Gold Finishes: This has become the classic that brush nickel once was. Brass and gold metallics bring warmth and is inviting. The kitchen will have a soft radiance that's both luxurious and cozy.
Integrated Handles: The ultimate illusionists, these handles offer a seamless look that's sleek and smart. It’s the epitome of modern design, where functionality meets form in the most discreet way.
Contrasting Hardware: This is different from mixed metals, it is for the bold. Contrasting hardware serves as the exclamation point in a space. It's a declaration of style that's both confident and captivating.
In kitchen design, hardware may play a supporting role, but it's pivotal in accomplishing the design goals for that home and/or client. It's about creating a space that resonates, reflects, and enriches. Whether you lean towards the understated elegance of minimalist designs or the warm embrace of mixed metals and textures, let your kitchen tell your story—one knob, pull, and handle at a time.
